Boatyard Rockfish Tournament (& Dick about town!)

Dick-Franyo-casting-with-Buddy-Pinder-fishing-the-Marles

One down and three to go--- the Boatyard outdoor charity events that is. Our Opening Day Spring Fishing Tournament (Catch and Release) was held on Sat April 21. It benefits the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Coastal Conservation Association MD and the Annapolis Police Department Youth Fishing Camp. It was a tough day for the large number of boats (131!) fishing wise (why? water too cold? fish still up the Bay and rivers spawning? Every fisherperson has a strongly felt opinion!). So, cool this year that second place was won by a woman (Sara Brown) and third place was won by a youth (Will Muscatello). First place was Rich Vigue at 42.25 inches caught jigging at the Power Plant. The awards party was huge and fun and the tough day fishing was quickly forgotten. Over 1,000 here at the Boatyard eating Chefs George’s great food, music by the Jess McQuay Band and a more than a few adult beverages. Thanks to Anglers Sports Center (Charlie and Jane Ebersberger), our presenting sponsor for all 17 years of the tournament and all of the other sponsors, captains and crews, our volunteers from CBF and my Boatyard team that does a remarkable job. 17 years-- Yikes!!!  Click here for tournament results and photos, and click here for FishTalk party coverage.

Jimmy Buffett at the Naval Academy

jimmy-buffett--unplugged-w-Mids

Paula used to hang yellow stickies on my door saying “write blog”.  Now I am currently so prolific she says “keep them short please.”  I will - always do as Paula says Dick!! (editor's note:  ha ha!)

Maguire's Irish Pub featuring Jeff Maguire as barkeep and owner for the day!

Every St. Paddy’s Day we turn the BY into “Maguires Irish Pub”.  Jeff Maquire was our bartender for years and before us McGarveys after a string of DC pubs during and after college.  He won “bartender of the year” for many years in Annapolis. We have great Irish fare and beer, a great band and a huge crowd coming in to pay their respects to Jeff and get their commemorative pint glass.

We went back to Hopetown, Elboy Cay, Abacos to our boat Georgina.

An amazing place to fish the reef heads; G drives and I fish. We caught a hound fish....nice teeth!  Shelling too - well G is better at it.   Her catch one afternoon....and sunset at Firefly that evening.

The Boatyard had a busy week........

On Tuesday we celebrated two lives.  Melbourne Smith, artist and tall ship designer; the designer and builder of the Pride of Baltimore I.  Melbourne was a regular here and gave us the original flag from Pride I that flew on its voyage around the world.

The same night we celebrated the life of the world’s most famous fly fisherman, Lefty Krey at Angler Night, organized by our dear friend Joe Evans, Editor of Chesapeake Bay Magazine. The house was packed.  Lefty was a legend, as was his Lefty’s Deceiver fly.  I got to fish twice with Lefty and he wrote a Baltimore Sun article about each trip.

RIP Melbourne and Lefty, you'll be sorely missed.

Jimmy Buffett at the Naval Academy

We were really honored (and excited) to be involved with Jimmy Buffett’s concert on Wednesday for the Mids at the Naval Academy.  First, lunch with Jimmy and a small group at Superintendent Vadm. Ted and Lynda Carter’s home, then on to the sound check,  a meet and greet with the band and other dignitaries, all topped off with an amazing concert-- the Mids said it was “epic.” Two things happened which were truly special.  The power went off for 15 minutes after about the fourth song. So, what did Jimmy do? He grabbed his acoustic guitar, went to the front of the stage, called the Mids in tight around him and sang four songs with the Mids singing along.   Lesson in improvising during hardship. He’s brilliant!!   We were honored when from the stage Jimmy and band leader Mike Utley acknowledged the Boatyard Bar & Grill, our famous crab cakes, and me personally. Thanks, JB and Mike! There are many pictures from the day but the one of Jimmy singing unplugged with the Mids is a big favorite!   jimmy buffett unplugged w Mids

The Boatyard Bar & Grill’s Dick Franyo Blog reveals his winter perspective – fun from mostly warm places!

Last Blog was end of December. Now it’s almost spring. Paula asking “Dick where’s the Blog already?” OK, just a few more pics of winter on the Bay. Can’t help myself. How many shades of grey? (Editor's Note:  50?).  And one with the Pilot Launch taking Bay pilots to and from the ships anchored in the middle of the Bay waiting to go into the Port of Baltimore. It’s a great career btw! Speaking of ships anchored waiting to go to the Port of Baltimore with this weeks high winds there were 21 ships anchored out there. A record for me.

Boatyard Crab Cakes shipped all over the US - Hopetown Music Fest - Happy New Year!

crab-cakes-to-ship-onlin_20180102-001152_1

Have to write a year end blog, right?

Boatyard crab cakes shipped all over the US - that's a day's shot of crab cake prep just before Christmas - almost every state got at least one order between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  We have now sold this year over 70,000 crab cakes.  Wow - Chef George you da man!

We joined the FoodyDirect platform offering the best and most iconic specialty foods from around the nation.  Customers go on our site or theirs to order.  Chef ensures they arrive overnight fresh, cold (never frozen), ready to cook.   Sous chef Nestor Gonzalez is supervising the five trips it took to get them all on the UPS truck!Crab cakes online shipping boxes

So how did we partner with FoodyDirect?

.....talk about 6 degrees of separation.  I was attending a Friends of St John’s College Board meeting and Michael Smith (a founder of White House Black Market and now owner of South Moon Under) said he had met Brad Koenig of FoodyDirect.  Brad mentioned to Michael about taking Microsoft public in 1986 when he was with Goldman Sachs.  Michael brought up my name as a friend from Annapolis who was also involved in the Microsoft deal.  (It was a joint Goldman Sachs/Alex Brown managed deal).  Brad said he remembered me from way back when.  Long story short I contacted him and he came by the Boatyard and had our crab cakes.  We shipped him some to his home in Palo Alto and we became a FoodyDirect provider.  How did he start the company?  After retiring from Goldman he happened to be in NYC walking to his favorite New York bagel store.  He said to himself “why can’t I get these bagels tomorrow in Palo Alto.”  He and his chef brother started the company and well, now he can.  We are proud to be a part of the FoodyDirect portfolio of the best.

Winter is here but we have passed the winter solstice and days are already getting longer-starting Dec 22.  The end of rockfish season has passed. The morning skies are amazing.....  Not a lot of boats on the Bay except AYC Frostbite sailing series on Sundays, the pilot launch taking pilots to merchant ships going into Baltimore and several watermen heading out or an occasional hardy soul trying to shed cabin fever.  I love the gray days actually with the only color being the red and green marks in the entrance to Back Creek.  Our friend, singer-songwriter Scott Kirby, wrote a great song about the gray days on the coast of Maine with the only color being one float from a lobster pot that was left over from summer-love the image.

The Boatyard is one of the 10 Most Famous Sailor's Bars in the World!

Boatyard-famous-Sailors-ba_20171201-224327_1

SailUniverse has named the Boatyard as one of the 10 Most Famous Sailors Bars in the World.

When owner Dick Franyo envisioned the Boatyard Bar & Grill, he saw it as a place where the casual sailor or Kiwi pro, avid boater or yacht owner, boat mechanic, fisherfolk and general lovers of the Chesapeake lifestyle would sit at the bar casually chatting up the last regatta or sharing briny tales of the big one that got away.

Boatyard bar & grill named one of the 10 most Famous Sailors Bars in the World by SailUniverse.

Have you heard our “Postcards from the Boatyard” 15 second spots on WRNR 103.1 in Annapolis?  After years of running 60 second ads by our amazing “voice of the Boatyard” Eastport pirate, sailing pro, fishing guide and boat builder, Tom Weaver, arrrrg, we wrote eleven 15 second “postcards” that Tom and I split recording. They are pretty fun and entertaining (if I say so myself).  They cover visits with Jack Johnson, Jimmy Buffett, Kevin Bacon, the First Lady, the genesis of our crab cakes and lobster rolls, how we came
